Hand-held edgers generally come in two types.

The basic edger is like a half-moon shaped spade with a broad top edge that makes a tread for your foot. They have a wood or fiberglass handle that you place between your lawn and path then step on the top of the blade to cut a neat edge.

The second type of manual edger is a rotary type that consists of a rubber covered wheel with a star shaped blade that rotates with the wheel against a fixed blade. This is all set at a right angle to a 4 ft handle and you run the wheel along the path so that the rotary blade cuts the grass along the edge.
